3 is the Magic Number!
The popular number has made its way into every aspect of the world’s culture, from religion to design itself. When thinking of revamping your dwelling, the remedy can sometimes be as simple as adhering to the rule of 3s. It might mean adding a few items, or shifting things around accordingly.
The basic idea of the rule: information and objects that appear in threes can be more appealing, memorable, and effective than other numbers of objects. Think of spacing in photographs and paintings. Think three-act plays. The three kittens who lost their mittens. Beginning, middle, end. Liberte, egalite, fraternite. Go, fight, win. You get the picture.
Don't mistake symmetry for harmony. With pairings of items, you are creating a reflection. With sets of 3, you can create drama or visual interest to a room. It will help give someone queues to have the eye travel around. So what does this mean, only sets of 3. No, it means that you can have things in multiple set of 3. Like 6 mirrors on a wall or 9 pillows on your couch.
It is also great to create sets of things that vary in different way. You can have 3 pillows that are the same size/shape, but have different patterns and textures. Another way to group is the same item with different scale of small, medium and large candle lanterns. If you really want to stretch you design skills, group things by a common color, material or design style. The more eclectic the thread that ties the items together, the more diverse and exciting the space.
